in september. white house correspondent dan lothian is traveling with the president. dan, at this point he's on record to raise almost a billion dollars now, and that's not including those outside super-pacs. how much is he expecting to raise tonight? >> reporter: well, millions of dollars, and we'll try to break that down later on in the evening, exactly how much they're expected to raise. they really believe this is important money that they need for a couple of reasons. first of all, the race is very tight. when you look at the national numbers, the race is very close. then you break it down to those key battleground states in ohio, in florida, in colorado and virginia. very close there as well. so they need it this money to really beef up their ground operation going into election day and also saturate the air wae waves with the telephone ads. they're bringing in millions of dollars. a lot is going out the door as well, fredricka. >> so, dan, a lot of questions have been asked of the president, and everyone else since the debate about, you know, a nearly unrecognizable obama during the

. two events are waiting for him. one is private, the other not so much. dan lothian live in los angeles for us. president is all about fund-raising tonight, dan. so who is going to help him more in los angeles, is it going to be the former president bill clinton or is it going to be, i don't know, bon jovi? >> reporter: wow, you know, that's a tough one. i have to say probably both of them will help him because, you know, the president not only bon jovi but also katy perry is here, george clooney, jennifer hudson. a lot of other big names that appeal to a broad array of voters from the old school like earth wind and fire, so older audiences but also some of the young people as well. so i think the president's covering it all with the various stars who are helping here at this fund-raiser but you can't take anything away from what the xlin believes former president bill clinton brings to the table, not only in the speeches he delivers, but also out there in fund-raising. he's held a number of fund-raising events and this week as well here in california he will be holding a fund-raiser. o

as many as 1500 pastors across the country would take part today. dan gilgoff joins us from washington to tell us more about what's happening here. dan, who is behind this, and what causes a candidate to be defined as "unbiblical" say some of the pastors? >> there's a conservative evangelical group called alliance defending freedom that organized the event today. what's really kind of incredible about it is this the third year they are challenging pastors to speak out for or against political candidates. what started a few dozen churches participated. this year today there were 1400 pastors who say they are participating. of course, the other big thing about this year that's different is there's a presidential election going on. so that the consequences of a mass number of preachers making political endorsements are, of course, a lot more dramatic because the white house is hanging in the balance. >> is this considered, you know, a case of religious principle or a political statement being made? >> i think it depends where you sit, because for the pastors who are participating in today

recall that when lloyd benson, who was running for vice president was debating dan quayle, also running on the republican side. one was a sort of an elder statesman. the other, of course, dan quayle, new to the scene, and he -- lloyd benson, who wasn't known for the quick quip, just absolutely levelled quail when he mentioned john f. kennedy and benson took this sort of huge indig nant exception to it and said, you know, i knew jack kennedy, and you're no jack kennedy, and it became this famous sort of slice down. it was kind of the end of the debate. you look at when walter mondale was debating, and there was this age issue about reagan and whether he was -- you know, whether he was getting too old, et cetera, and he joked about it. it was after a bad debate, actually, and he joked about it and said i'm not going to make my opponents relative youth an issue here. there are things that can happen, and the dynamic really is the senior statesman and the new young upstart as you go in the joe biden and paul ryan. i think it will be fascinating to watch not just for what they say. there's a

embed carrie dan. she's embedded with vice president joe biden's team. carrie, vice president biden's schedule shows him to be in wilmington, delaware, right now, and for the next few days. what is planned for him? >> that's right, milissa. he's going to be doing his own debate camp there, up until a day before the debate. he's spending time with chris van hollen, that's his sparring partner. van hollen has worked with paul ryan, he's a democrat from maryland, who worked with ryan with and against on the house budget committee. so van hollen is someone who's very familiar, not only with his policies. so the two of them will be participating in mock debates. they've done two to date, and i'm sure they'll be doing a lot more up until wednesday, before they head to danville, kentucky, for the big night. >> what is the biggest concern for mr. biden and his team? >> well, when they really would like to do is to change the conversation from last week's performance by barack obama, get to change that conversation on thursday, and to really talk specifically about the ryan budget. joe biden

the campaign trail. cnn's dan lothian is live for us in denver with some white house reaction to the debate last night. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. first of all, what you're hearing from the obama campaign is that a mission that in fact governor romney did have a strong performance last night, but they're going after the substance, pointing to what they say are flaws and distortions in his policies, and overall, they don't believe that the performance by the president last night and the performance by governor romney will in any way shift this race dramatically. we'll have to wait and see. i mean, we'll be watching in key battleground states like ohio or even here in colorado, taking a look at the polling over the coming days to see if, in fact, things will change. but the bottom line for the campaign is they believe that the president came in here and did what he set out to do, which is to have a conversation with the american people. the problem for the campaign is that governor romney came in here to have more than a conversation. he challenged the president. he did no
